The Decorators - Hackney Hall

Hackney Hall is a project which aims to connect the older residents of the area with the day to day life of Dalston Square.

The Hackney Hall is a project which is being developed by The Decorators with the residents of Keswick and Parton lodge, a supported housing scheme for older people on the edge of Dalston Square. There are currently 376,250 elderly people in care homes in England, with a rapidly ageing population making it likely the number will continue to increase. The issue of social isolation that many retirement homes face can be exacerbated by the rapid process of gentrification and change that many of London’s inner city boroughs are experiencing, changes that are geared towards the young, mobile and cash-rich.

The Hackney Hall is a small experiment to see if a system can be put in place that makes these new spaces which have not been designed with the elderly in mind more inviting and accessible to the older residents of Dalston. The Hackney Hall is not one space. It is a local membership scheme. Membership to the Hackney Hall is free and open to anyone over the age of 65 and provides discounts at businesses on the square and the surrounding area and communicates local events and resources. At the moment Route Café, the Library Café, the Cooperative and Smooth You Salon in Dalston Square are taking part in the scheme and we would like many more businesses to join up.

To address the lack of comfortable seating for older residents in Dalston Square thus we are designing and manufacturing seating specifically with the elderly in mind to be placed permanently in the cafes, library and beauty salon. The furniture becomes the identity for the project highlighting that the particular business is a supporter of the Hackney Hall project. Thus The Hackney Hall becomes a communication strategy to link and inform older residents of the area with the happenings of Dalston Square.
