Sue King Glass

Inspired by colour and light, I design and create vibrant kiln-formed glass for both residential and commercial interior projects, recently specialising in healthcare commissions.

Originally qualifying with BA Interior Design, I worked for various hotel design practices, before running my own design consultancy. However, a long-held love of glass beckoned and in 2000, I returned to study and graduated in Glass with Architecture/Fine Art from Central St Martins College of Art & Design in 2002.

My work is imbued with a passion for colour, taking inspiration from artists, nature and pattern and my own photography. I have developed a fluid technique of working in a painterly style whereby coloured glass is cut freehand, overlaid onto a clear sheet of glass and then fired at temperatures of 815 degrees.

Commissions are developed closely with clients with hand drawn watercolour sketches that are translated into glass.

I enjoy exploring how glass interacts with light and I often incorporate textural markings to bring out these qualities. Glass shows its best qualities when displayed in natural light allowing the changing daylight to illuminate the glass transforming the surface and wall reflections.

All my glass designs are one off pieces, so customers know they have a unique handmade piece of glass.   I also create a varied collection of smaller colourful tableware pieces which clients love buying for themselves or for special gifts.  Pieces include small hanging panels and dishes from £15, up to large platters for around £150-£170. The tableware pieces reflect the style from the 50’s/60’s with a contemporary twist.

Larger commissions include panels for hospice bereavement suites, wall panels for hospital corridors, stylish sculptures for a Saudi Arabian hotel, and a feature panel for Molton Brown’s store in New York. Recent projects also include the interior design and project management for the Dimbleby Cancer Care Centre at the new Cancer Centre at Guys Hospital. Site specific artwork for Lewisham/Greenwich NHS Trust, and glass wall art for Salisbury Hospital’s new Breast Cancer Centre.
