New and emerging musicians will be given the opportunity to perform at gigs in and around Napier's Art Deco city centre including in bars, cafes, boutiques and bookshops. City Showcase – Spotlight London has helped showcase artists, including Keane, Razorlight, Amy Winehouse, Newton Faulkner, Hot Chip, Scouting for Girls, Sway, Seth Lakeman, N-Dubz, Gurrumul, Lady Sovereign, Jay Sean, Mr Hudson and Ray LaMontagne, garnering them all a huge amount of both industry and media attention.
A judging panel made up of leaders from the New Zealand music industry will be in Napier to select acts to perform at the festival's finale and the public will also have the chance to vote for their favourite acts. The winner of the 'Finding The Future' event to be held at the Soundshell on 28 November will win a chance to play in London in May 2011.
Napier Mayor, Barbara Arnott, offered her support to the new musical event and said she looked forward to inner city Napier "humming" with music for a long weekend. "The Napier community has a reputation for supporting musical events and they certainly do know how to party." "The Napier CBD is well set up for an event like this with plenty of space for musicians and audiences," Mayor Arnott added. "This is very positive for Napier and for the musicians who are selected to perform," she said.
City Showcase – Spotlight London has been launching new musical talent in the UK since 2003. The event is widely recognised as being one of the most diverse and high profile festivals in the world with over 460 entrants performing in central London in 2009, covering a range of musical genres.
New Zealand will be the first country to host a City Showcase event outside of the UK.
